Most fastener pops are install- or movement-related. What standards govern drywall installation?

Two main ones. ASTM C840 is the standard specification for applying and finishing gypsum board, and the Gypsum Association's GA-216 covers application and finishing in detail — fastener spacing, joint treatment, and board orientation. Finish levels come from GA-214. These aren't suggestions: fastener spacing, staggered joints, and board orientation are specified, and a wall hung and finished to them resists pops and cracks. Do decorative wall finishes mount over drywall or replace it?

Almost always over it. Shiplap, wainscoting, wood panels, and 3D panels are upgrades you add for texture and character, and they mount over drywall — the flat, sound base they fasten to. So get the drywall right first, because it's the substrate that lets every finish above it go on true; a wavy or poorly fastened wall undermines whatever goes on top.

Why is my drywall cracking at the corners of doors and windows?

Those are stress points, and hairline cracks there are common with normal seasonal building movement. The framing around openings concentrates stress, so a seam at a door or window corner is the first place a wall shows movement — especially if the butt joint wasn't floated wide or the seam was under-mudded. How do I clean and maintain drywall?

Finished, painted drywall is low-maintenance: clean it with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, washing gently so you don't burnish the paint. The real enemy is moisture — address leaks promptly, run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and control humidity, because the fastest way to ruin drywall is to let it get and stay wet, which softens the core and grows mold on the paper. Is drywall or plaster better?

It depends on the goal. Traditional lath-and-plaster gives a hard, monolithic wall but is slow and costly; veneer plaster over blueboard is a faster middle ground with a very hard surface. Drywall won the modern default on speed, cost, and repairability — it hangs fast, finishes flat, and patches easily, and at Level 5 it can read just as smooth as plaster. Plaster still appeals for historic homes and where its hardness and feel are wanted, but for most new interior work drywall is the practical choice.

What is a Level 5 finish and is it worth it?

A Level 5 finish adds a skim coat of joint compound over the entire wall surface, on top of the taping, fastener spotting, and corner work of a Level 4. It's worth it — and often necessary — where light rakes across the wall or the paint is glossy, because those conditions exaggerate every seam and fastener that a lower level leaves slightly visible. It costs more in material and skilled labor, but for a critically lit feature wall or a high-gloss finish, it's the difference between a flawless surface and one that telegraphs its seams.
