Is all vinyl flooring really waterproof?

No — and the distinction matters. A true rigid-core product (SPC or WPC) is 100% waterproof in its body, meaning the plank itself will not swell when wet, unlike laminate's fiberboard core. Flexible glue-down and sheet vinyl are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. But even a waterproof plank only protects against water from above; in a full bathroom or laundry, the install still depends on sealed click joints and perimeter detailing so water cannot reach the substrate through the seams. That is why you read the moisture or waterproof warranty for the exposure it actually covers, not just the word on the label. Can luxury vinyl plank be refinished when it wears out?

No — this is vinyl's honest limit. There is no sanding or refinishing a vinyl floor: the printed design sits under a finite clear wear layer, and once that film abrades through in traffic paths, the look is gone for good and the floor — or the worn section — is replaced, not renewed. That is the fundamental trade against hardwood, which can be sanded back to new many times. Does the subfloor need to be perfectly flat for vinyl?

It needs to meet the manufacturer's flatness tolerance, because vinyl is thin and resilient and telegraphs what is under it. Ridges, debris, and dips will print through a thinner plank as visible high spots or a hollow, uneven feel underfoot. A dense SPC core hides minor imperfections better than a flexible or thin plank, but neither substitutes for prep: the installer reads the subfloor against the published tolerance, grinds high spots, and fills low spots before the floor goes down. Over concrete, the slab is also moisture-tested by ASTM F2170 before a sealed floating floor traps vapor underneath. Why is my floating vinyl floor peaking or lifting at the seams?

It is almost always an expansion-gap or acclimation problem, not a product defect. A floating floor connects plank-to-plank and moves as one connected sheet with temperature, so it needs a continuous perimeter expansion gap at every wall and obstruction, hidden under trim. Installed tight to the walls, it grows when warm and has nowhere to go, so it tents at the seams. The same happens when planks were never acclimated to the room and expand after they were locked together. LVP, LVT, sheet, or waterproof vinyl — which format do I want?

Pick the format for the look and the room, before color or mil. rigid-core luxury vinyl is the dominant choice for a wood look — rigid, waterproof, clicks together over a flat subfloor. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is the same technology in a tile or square format for a stone look, warmer and softer than real tile. Waterproof rigid-core vinyl is the subset engineered for the wettest rooms, rated for full baths and laundries with sealed joints. Sheet vinyl comes in 6 ft or 12 ft rolls with the fewest seams — the most seam-free, lowest-cost wet floor. The rule: plank for living spaces, tile for stone, waterproof rigid-core for wet rooms, sheet for the most economical seam-free floor.

Can I install vinyl plank over my existing tile or vinyl floor?

Often, yes — rigid-core vinyl is one of the more forgiving floors to install over an existing surface. A floating click-lock LVP can frequently go over sound, flat, well-bonded tile or an old vinyl floor, provided the existing floor still meets the flatness tolerance and the added height does not bind doors or create trip points at transitions. The catches are real: a deeply textured or grouted tile may need a skim or an underlayment so the grout lines do not telegraph, an unbonded or uneven old floor must come up, and total finished height at doorways has to be planned. Glue-down vinyl usually wants the old surface removed for a clean bond. A good installer assesses this on site rather than assuming; if removal is needed, confirm in the quote that it and disposal are included.

Does overall plank thickness matter, or just the wear layer?

They control different things, and confusing them is the most common vinyl buying mistake. A thick plank with a thin wear layer feels substantial but still scuffs and dulls early, because the thin top film, not the bulk beneath it, is what faces the traffic. How do I clean vinyl without damaging it?

Vinyl is one of the lowest-maintenance floors made, but a few rules protect the wear layer. Sweep or dry-vacuum first to remove grit, which is the real abrasive working against the surface, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner — routine wet cleaning is fine, since vinyl tolerates water far better than wood. The hard rules: skip steam mops, which drive heat and moisture into the seams and can soften or cloud the surface; avoid abrasive pads, wax, and harsh solvents that dull the finish; and use felt pads under furniture and hard protectors under rolling chairs against the point loads that gouge a resilient surface. There is no refinishing to fall back on, so the cleaning routine is about preserving the wear layer you bought rather than recovering it later. Yes — a below-grade a below-grade basement is one of vinyl's strongest use cases, because a rigid-core product is 100% waterproof and tolerates the slab moisture that rules out solid wood and ruins laminate. Choose a rigid SPC or WPC core, and over the slab have the installer moisture-test by ASTM F2170 before a sealed floating floor traps vapor underneath — the floor is waterproof from above, but trapped vapor still needs to be accounted for. A denser SPC core also helps over a slab that is not perfectly flat. Will direct sunlight damage my vinyl floor?

It can, especially with thinner products, which is a real and often-overlooked limit. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, and in direct, intense sun it can expand, discolor or fade, and — in a sealed room behind glass — even soften. That is why some products carry restrictions for sunrooms and heavily glassed spaces, and why a floating install in a sunny room needs its expansion gap respected so the floor can move without peaking.
