NRC — Noise Reduction Coefficient — measures how much sound a panel absorbs on a 0 to 1 scale, where higher absorbs more. It matters because it's the only proof a panel sold for sound actually works: a real acoustic panel with an absorptive backing publishes one, while a decorative sculpted panel does not. Before buying anything marketed as "acoustic," ask for the published NRC of the exact panel and backing. No number on the data sheet means the panel is decorative, not acoustic.

How are 3D wall panels installed — glue or screws?

Most go up with a panel-rated construction adhesive over a clean, flat, sound wall, sometimes with fasteners. But heavier gypsum and wood panels need mechanical fastening into studs or added blocking, not glue alone, or they pull away over time. The substrate has to be clean and flat — adhesive grips dust and gloss poorly, and an out-of-plane wall telegraphs through the panels. Why did my PVC panels buckle or open at the seams?

Almost always thermal movement. Real wood paneling brings genuine grain and warmth; the 3D-panel category includes molded imitations and non-wood materials that install lighter and often cheaper. Choose real wood for authenticity, 3D panels for sculpted geometry, the moisture tolerance only PVC offers, or budget. There's genuine overlap — fluted wood lives in both categories. Do gypsum or MDF panels meet fire code on a stairwell?

It depends on the panel's flame-spread class — the ASTM E84 rating — and the local code. Gypsum panels tend to perform well on flame spread, while some plastics perform less well, so the rating matters most on a stairwell or other egress path where combustible wall finishes are regulated. How do I clean and maintain 3D wall panels?

Care depends on the material, and the relief collects dust — the deeper the relief, the more the ledges hold — so dust regularly with a soft brush or vacuum brush attachment. PVC panels are easiest: wipe with a damp cloth and mild cleaner, which is why they suit kitchens and baths.
