Is tile or LVP warmer and more comfortable underfoot?

Can I install tile or LVP over my existing floor?

LVP often can; tile usually needs a proper substrate underneath. Floating LVP can frequently go over a sound, flat, well-bonded existing floor with the right underlayment, as long as flatness meets 3/16" over 10 ft and the added height does not bind doors — a real convenience. Tile is stricter: it needs a rigid, appropriately prepared substrate (a rated backer board or uncoupling membrane, adequate stiffness to L/360 or more), so it usually is not simply set over another finished floor without the correct base. What PEI rating do I need for floor tile?

For floors, choose PEI IV or PEI V. The PEI rating — Porcelain Enamel Institute scale — grades a tile's surface abrasion resistance from PEI I (walls only) to PEI V (heaviest floor traffic). A busy household floor wants at least PEI IV, and high-traffic entries or light commercial spaces want PEI V. A common and costly mistake is putting a low-PEI wall tile on a floor, where it wears and scratches under foot traffic. Does LVP or tile handle heavy pet traffic better?
