Is slate a good floor for wet or high-traffic areas?

Yes — it is arguably the best natural stone for both. And because slate is a hard silicate stone rather than soft calcite, it stands up to traffic that would scratch marble or travertine. Entries, mudrooms, kitchens, wet-adjacent bathroom floors, and covered patios in mild climates are all natural slate territory — genuine stone you can actually live on hard.

Does slate etch from acids like marble does?

No — and this is slate's biggest advantage over the calcite stones. Marble and travertine are made of calcite, which reacts chemically with acids and etches (dulls) on contact with wine, citrus, or acidic cleaners. Slate is composed mainly of hard silicate minerals, so those same acids do not chemically attack it. That freedom from etching is what makes slate the low-maintenance natural stone: it still benefits from sealing against staining, but you are spared the constant acid-avoidance discipline marble and travertine demand, which is exactly why slate works in a kitchen where they struggle.

What is a cleft finish on slate?

A cleft (or riven) finish is slate's natural split surface. Slate forms in layers and cleaves along those planes into thin, flat sheets, so a cleft slate tile keeps that naturally textured, slightly uneven top face rather than being ground smooth. What is the difference between gauged and ungauged slate?

It refers to the back of the tile and its thickness. Gauged slate is ground flat on the back for uniform thickness, which makes it much easier to set flat and reduces lippage — the uneven edges you feel and trip on. Ungauged (or calibrated only on the face) slate keeps its natural thickness variation, which is more authentic but demands a skilled installer and often a thicker mortar bed to bring the varying tiles flush. Confirm which you are buying, because it changes both the setting difficulty and cost and how the finished floor feels underfoot.

Why is some slate flaking on the surface?

That is spalling — thin surface layers shedding from the stone — and it is almost always a grade issue. Slate quality varies widely by quarry: dense, high-grade slate resists flaking, while softer, cheaper slate can shed thin flakes, especially early in its life. Some minor flaking on lower grades settles down as the floor wears in, but persistent spalling means the stone was under-graded for a floor. The prevention is sourcing dense, known-quality slate rather than the cheapest lot — which is why, with slate, the grade matters more than the color for how the floor performs.

Does slate need to be sealed?

It benefits from sealing, but far more lightly than marble or travertine. Slate is not acid-sensitive, so you are sealing only against staining, not against etching. A penetrating or enhancing sealer slows staining and, in the enhancing case, deepens slate's color and richness. Maintain it on a light periodic cadence — a simple water-bead test tells you when the seal is wearing thin. Compared to the calcite stones, which need diligent sealing plus constant acid avoidance, slate's care is genuinely low-fuss: seal, sweep the textured surface, and clean with a pH-neutral product.

Can slate be used in a kitchen?

Yes — and it is one of the best natural stones for a kitchen, precisely because it is not acid-sensitive. A kitchen sees citrus, wine, tomato, and vinegar that would etch marble or travertine, but those acids do not chemically attack slate's silicate surface. Slate is also hard enough to take kitchen traffic and dropped pans, and a cleft finish grips well against spills. The trades to accept: it is cold and hard underfoot (a comfort issue at the sink), the textured surface holds a bit more dust, and you should source a dense grade so it does not flake. Sealing against staining is still worthwhile.

Is slate cold and hard underfoot?

Yes — like all stone and tile, slate is cold, hard, and acoustically firm, and a dropped glass shatters on it. That makes it a poor fit for a bedroom or a room where you stand for long stretches without a mat. The cleft texture is grippier but slightly less smooth underfoot than a honed surface. The upside is that slate transmits heat well, so over a radiant-heat system the cold turns into an asset — a warmed slate floor is comfortable. Where comfort leads and there is no radiant heat, area rugs help; where durability and grip lead, slate's hardness is the point.

How is slate different from a slate-look porcelain?

Real slate is genuine natural stone with authentic depth, a cool touch, and one-of-a-kind color movement — but its quality varies, lower grades can flake, and it benefits from sealing. Slate-look impervious porcelain is a printed, vitrified tile that mimics the riven, layered look with perfect consistency: under 0.5% absorption, uniform thickness, no flaking, and no sealing ever. Choose real slate where authenticity and natural character are the point and you want the genuine article; choose the porcelain where you want the look with zero variation, zero maintenance, and a guaranteed freeze rating. Can slate go outdoors or on a patio?

Often yes in a mild climate, with a caveat in cold ones. Slate's grip and hardness make it a strong choice for a covered patio or pool surround, and unlike calcite stone it shrugs off acidic rain. In a freeze-prone climate, though, water absorbed by a lower-grade, more porous slate can freeze, expand, and cause spalling, so you must confirm the specific slate is rated for freeze-thaw — a dense, low-absorption grade — or use a frost-rated a porcelain surface instead. The setting also changes outdoors: a sloped, properly bedded exterior installation with movement joints.

Why does slate crack, and how is it prevented?

Even though slate is hard, it is rigid, so it cracks over a substrate that moves — the same failure mode as any stone or tile. If the floor beneath it deflects because the joists or subfloor are not stiff enough, the slate or its grout cracks; cracks that run in a straight line point to a missing movement joint. The prevention is a substrate meeting the stricter L/720 stone deflection limit, with backer board or an uncoupling membrane over wood and soft movement joints at the perimeter and across large fields. How do I handle slate's color variation?

Embrace it — the variation is slate's character, not a defect. Natural slate ranges in color within a single lot, from grays and blacks to rust, gold, green, and purple tones depending on the source, and that movement is a large part of its appeal. The way to make it read intentional is to have the installer dry-lay the tiles before setting, arranging them so the color range is blended and balanced across the floor rather than clustered.
